mmr vaccine rash

warning: graphic pictures
last week parker got his first rash. it started on his stomach and spread more every day. it was one of the scariest things we have gone through with our lil' guy. after much thought and research, i believe the mmr vaccine is to blame. just google "mmr vaccine rash" and you'll see several similar pictures.
the good part is that parker has been acting completely normal and playing all day everyday. he still smiles and laughs, but ughhh--look at that rash! it cannot be comfortable. we went to the doctor friday and got some meds. thankfully parks is doing much better.
posing with the spots. you can see how tired he is fighting the infection.
new buzz lightyear scooter. he LOVES it! and i love it because it is the first toy james' ever bought for parks (we are extremely frugal, especially when it comes to toys because "you are the best toy for your child" :) and others spoil him to death).

moral of the story: i have never been a big anti-vaccination person. honestly, i have not done that much research on them. after this horrid rash, though, you better bet i am going to read some books and delay our next child's shots. and i might just have a home birth, too! :) ha.

Silvy,

Aidan hasn't even had his first MMR shot yet. We delayed his shots and he has never had more than two at a time. I wanted him to be older before he got the MMR because it a combination shot that is quite strong. I am not sure yet if I will start it when we go in for his 2 year appt. (which he turned 2 already, but we have not made yet). I am definitely for vaccinations, just not at the rate that they are given. I read a lot of stuff and talked to people about it before Aidan had his first shots. It still is hard to know what is the "best" way to vaccinate. Sorry that he had to deal with such a horrible rash. It is nerve wracking when your child gets something like that!

Did you get the MMR all together? I'm scared about that vaccine too because I've heard not good things about it. We're doing the extended schedule so Eve won't get any at the same time. I hope it will help with any bad reactions! I'm so glad Parker is happy though and not in pain. What a trooper, but rashes are not fun=(

hey silvy,

over here in the UK they give shots at a much slower and more spread out pace. I have loads of info from our health visitor about shots etc... i am happy to spend you the info for furture reference. i am slowing the pace of e's shots and i will keep her on the british system even when we move back to the states (did you know we are moving to arkansas for sure?) anyway, let me know if you want the info.

so sorry about parkers rash, glad he is getting better

No! Don't be anti-vaccine!
Haha... I guess we can have that argument later. For now, I hope Parks is feeling better!!

Silvy, Was the doctor able to confirm that the rash came from the MMR?

Some of my close friends (and mommies) here in Nashville have talked a lot about this book: http://www.amazon.com/Vaccine-Book-Decision-Parenting-Library/dp/0316017507

Hope it helps!

Hi there! I found your blog through googling things on the MMR vaccine rash. We are in the middle of it...Day 4 of the rash accompanied by a low grade fever. I'm trying to figure out if there is anything I can be doing rather than just waiting and "maintaining his comfort" with Motrin/Tylenol. How long did the rash last? Did he have a fever?

You can email me directly if you have the time! Any information is really appreciated :) jessica.hulse@gmail.com

Hi There-
I also found your blog by googling, as my daughter just broke out with the rash exactly 10 days after her MMR. This happened with my son as well but I couldn't remember how long it lasted. This can happen in 5-10% of children after the vaccine. Remember it is a live vaccine so it is the bodies way/reacting to the live measles part of it. They are not contagious and it only lasts a few days. Does not mean it is an allergic reaction to the vaccine nor will they get a rash like this again with another vaccine. It is good to educate yourself about vaccines and the importance of them. Especially with so many people now-a-days opting out and relying on the "herd effect", some of these diseases are on the rise again and increase you childs risk if not vaccinated. I will continue to vaccinate for the safety of our children. Best of luck to you and I am sure your little one is and will be fine :)

Hi, another Mum who found your blog thanks to Google. My 2nd child just had her 12 month shots at the start of the week and now has the rash. It's made her really tired and irritable, and made me scared and worried. But I can only imagine if we hadn't got her immunised and she got a full blown case, how much worse that would be.

My son also had a reaction and it has been the most stressful week of my life. Everything I have been readings says a reaction is not likely but after seeing how many moms are going through this, I think they are lying to us! I just want my happy healthy boy to be back to his old self.

Hello. My son had an reaction from a mmr shot given to him over a month ago. His break out has been the worst ever.
Tomorrow we se an allergy specialist for a skin test.hopefully we will have answers .
He is 5 now, and the only reason we decided to give him the shots this year , was due to kindergarden starting this year. ...
Could you tell me the name of what they prescribed so I could at least tell my doctor.??

My little girl also got a rash. We got the MMR almost two weeks ago, and the rash came day 11.It started on her tummy and then spread to her back and arms and legs...she also got diagnosed with a URI monday? Any other babies have breathing issues after?

We got our daughter mmr and same story! 11 days later rash...fever...exhausted little girl. She also got diagnosed with URI this week...there is not anyway that could be vaccine related right?

My daughter has had a horrible reaction too. I waited until she was 20 months to give her the MMR vac. and she started to convulse due to high fever, vomited during the night on night 1 at home, and now, 7 days later has broken out into this rash (just like the pic on the blog). I was hesitant to give this vaccination to her in the first place but we are traveling out of the country in a couple of weeks. I won't be giving her round 2!

Make sure that you or your pediatrician report these "reactions" to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (vaers.hhs.gov). Being a new mom and not having done enough reading, I didn't know that my son's pediatrician was supposed to have us come in to document his "reaction," rather than just tell me to keep him home and use a fever reducer if necessary. Funny how this MMR vaccine with a small amount of the measles virus may cause a "reaction" rather than a light case of measles. Doctors are required to document "reactions," but I have seen that some do & some don't. Maybe if all of them did document & report, or if parents knew to report to VAERS, then the statistics would more than likely show that more than just 5% of kids are having this "reaction." Whether you vaccinate or not, you will find Dr. Lauren Feder's book helpful: The Parents' Concise Guide to Childhood Vaccinations. She offers help for either path you choose.
